Casting the Circle

Monica Sjöö föddes i Härnösand men var verksam internationellt. Hennes bas under större delen av livet var Bristol i England. Det var också i Bristol som Plender först kom i kontakt med Sjöös konst och aktivism.

Plender arbetar med forskningsbaserade och konstnärliga metoder och har i sin praktik särskilt intressat sig för sociala och religiösa rörelser, särskilt de med kontaktytor mot feminismen. Tidigare projekt har bland annat handlat om den moderna spiritualismen och den brittiska ungdomsrörelsen The Kindred of the Kibbo Kift.

Genom ett föredrag och ett samtal som rör sig runt i utställningen kommer Plender reflektera kring sitt eget möte med Sjöö- men även med gudinnerörelsen, feminismen och wicca under 1990-talet. Publiken får möjlighet att ställa frågor och bidra till samtalet kring konsten och de rörelser som Monica Sjöö var en del av.

Casting the Circle - a walk through of the Monica Sjöö exhibition with Olivia Plender

Olivia Plender is a British artist and researcher based in Stockholm. Many of her artworks are based on her research into social and religious movements from the nineteenth- and early twentieth centuries, particularly those which intersect with the history of feminism. These include projects about spirit mediums within The Modern Spiritualist Movement, as well as The Kindred of the Kibbo Kift, a British youth movement from the 1920s. In her talk Olivia will reflect on her encounters with the art of Monica Sjöö, through her own involvement with the Goddess movement, feminism and witchcraft in the 1990s. Sjöö spent much of her adult life in Bristol, UK, which was where Olivia first became aware of her art and activism. The audience is invited to walk through the exhibition with Olivia who will give insights into Sjöös practice, and the works on display. This walk though through presentation will be in English, and open an interactive conversation with the audience.
